The AFLA has maintained its focus for more than 70 years on relevant issues of foreign, international and comparative law of importance to the legal profession. With the globalization of trade and finance, knowledge of foreign and comparative law is even more critical for an increasing number of attorneys.
Many of the AFLA's members have studied or practiced law in more than one country and many are fluent in more than one language. They include practitioners, judges, legal scholars and attorneys associated with international organizations including the United Nations Organizations. The AFLA is a 501 (C)(3) organization under the Internal Revenue code.
The AFLA was a founding member of the American Society of Comparative Law, which publishes the The American Journal of Comparative Law, one of the foremost American publications in its field.
Each November the AFLA, together with the American Society of International Law, the American Branch of the International Law Association and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, among other professional groups, organizes the International Law Weekend, which is a forum dedicated to a broad range of private and public international legal matters. In addition, the AFLA often co-sponsors programs with other professional organizations, in particular the International Section of the American Bar Association.
